I have been an antique dealer since 1970, and a full-time dealer since 1993. Until recently I always dealt in American antique furniture, mainly cherry, figured maple, pine, and painted — functional pieces in good condition. In the 1970’s, we were, in addition, quilt specialists – when very few antique dealers were handling them. We would sell from our house, at Brimfield (yes, I was doing Brimfield when there was only one field there), at Pennsylvania markets, and at Russell Carrell shows.
Around 1985, I occasionally bought antique picture frames. The 19th-century lemon gold ones would sell quickly. That began my interest, study, and near daily pursuit of simple American gilt frames. I maintain an inventory of over 500 19th-century antique frames. While most people still think of me as an antique dealer, some people now think of me primarily as an antique frame dealer.
